When I first began my freelance career I met with an advisor from a local college. Our first meeting he asked why I wanted to have a career as a filmmaker. I said the usual thing I say, I’ve always been drawn to movies, I love composing a shot, telling a story. He cut me off and said, “No, that isn’t why you want to be a filmmaker. What is the underlying belief that you have that causes you to pick up a camera?”
“You mean my mission statement?” I was trying to frame his question within the parameters of what I assumed was the point of our meeting.
“No, deeper than that. When you boil down everything you do, what do you believe about what you do? If you can’t say it in a few words, it’s not the reason..”
I had never put to words why I did this. So for the next few weeks I whittled down my thoughts until I had as concise a phrase as possible: THE ONLY THING THAT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD IS STORY. I didn’t know it at the time but this statement would change my career.
This is a tee based on that idea. I wanted to make a design that paid homage to storytellers who have impacted me. Shel Silverstein was one one of those storytellers. In school his books felt dangerous and exciting. I would read them over and over again. When my son was a baby I would read “The Giving Tree” every night to him. Most nights I would get choked up as we neared the last page. The cover of “Where the Sidewalk Ends” is the obvious inspiration for this tee. I even re-drew the artwork at the top with my dog and wife beside me as I use my Canon 1DC to film over the edge of the sidewalk.
So this might be the first of many designs or the only one. We will see. Once I get a good amount of orders I will send them off to be printed and will ship them to you. Thanks!
